Chairmans Report

Brian Wilcock, Retiring Chairman of the Board
Having been Chairman of the Board since November 1997 I have now completed 3 years in that post and in accordance with Standing Order 1.2, to say nothing of my own wishes, I must stand down.

The past three years have seen great changes in every aspect of our operation. There is no doubt that the passage of time had necessitated this revision and I hope that it will stand us in good stead for many years to come. Nevertheless all systems need to evolve to keep up with changing times and future members will need to review the organisation regularly to ensure it remains relevant.

The past three years have seen a new staffing structure, a new committee structure, new Byelaws, new Standing Orders, a new Management Plan, together with the first of many detailed Work Plans, increased cooperation with other agencies in order to obtain greater grant aid and an increased emphasis on publicity.

Over the past year we have lost some valued Board members but have gained some promising newcomers. Of our valued staff Mike Nelson has retired and John Morris has resigned, the remainder are still rendering yeoman service to the Board and the public. The replacement Senior Warden, Simon Burnham- Slipper has only recently arrived but is making a good start. Nicky Quinn has held dog awareness and training events and volunteer conservation days, they now publish their own regular newsletter, The Beacon.

The first hurdle in the Heritage Lottery Bid process has been successfully crossed and our staff, the AONB Officer and other affected bodies are now working to flesh out the detail for the final bid.

The Land Management side of our business is also being modernised, increasing use of computerised records of work is anticipated to lead eventually to more efficient operation and use of workforce and contractors. Good progress is being made in computerising the land terrier in association with the GIS system. The results are quite impressive and when complete should save hours of searching through old deeds and records.

Consultation with Parish Councils is being increased and in some cases this is leading to joint working to tackle local problems.

Finally I must record my thanks to both Board Members and all our Staff for their help and co-operation over the past years.
