Conservation Group Saturday Projects 2012

7th Jan 2012Location:*New Site* Swinyard Hill, adder site (SO 763 382, map 1). Follow MHC signs from Welland Village through Castlemorton Common, and park at Swinyard car park. Project: Meet Nigel Hand, reptile ecologist, and help to create glades for basking adders.
4th Feb 2012Location: Hayslad Bog, West Malvern (SO 763 467, map 2). Park on lay-by opposite Hayslad Spring (popular water collection site) on West Malvern             Road NOTE!  Bring wellies. Project: Unique area of wetland plants which we will be helping with some scrub clearance
3rd Mar 2012Location: Parkwood, West Malvern (SO 762 443, map 3). Park at the top of the Purlieu (by West Malvern Road) and have a lift or walk (10 mins) to Parkwood.  NOTE! Rough track for vehicles! Project: Planting hazel, oak and ash trees in this ancient woodland.
7th Apr 2012Location: Rushy Valley, bilberry site (SO 772 454, map 4).Park on the Wyche Road near to the Lower Wyche Road turning. NOTE! 20 minute walk to this site! Project: Cutting down the rowan saplings that are competing with the lesscommonly found bilberry plants, which are an important part of the SSSI designation.         
5th May 2012Location: Swinyard Flush, Castlemorton (SO 764 381, map 5). Follow MHC signs from Welland Village through Castlemorton Common, and park at Swinyard car park. Project: Weakening the bracken growth in the flush (a SSSI) by cutting it. This helps a host of wildflower species, reptiles and the very rare high brown fritillary butterfly.
2nd June 2012 Location: Ballard’s Land, Chase Road (SO 765 424, map 6). Park on Chase Road. Follow MHC signs from the Kettle Sings café on Jubilee Drive. Project:Hand pulling/ cutting the invasive creeping thistle from this meadow which is one of the best sites for heath-spotted orchids in Herefordshire.

13th Jan 2012Location: Berrington Quarry, glow worm site.(SO 769 412, map 1). Park at Blackhill car park, Jubilee Drive.  NOTE!  10 minute walk to the site! Project:On-going clearance of ash trees which are causing shading of glow worm  habitat, which is flower-rich grassland.
27th Jan 2012      Location: Mill Pond Orchard, Golden Valley.(SO 771 418, map 2). Follow the Gloucester Road (B4208) from Welland for approx. 3 miles until a sign on the left indicates ‘Golden Valley’ to the right. Follow MHC signs to the car park.Project: Planting several new apple trees, plus clearing the brambles  from around some of the long established trees.
10th Feb 2012Location: Parkwood, West Malvern (SO 762 443, map 3). Park at the top of the Purlieu (by West Malvern Road) and have a lift, or walk (10 mins) to Parkwood. NOTE ! Rough track for vehicles. Project: Helping local coppice worker, Dave Jackson. Coppicing is a traditional form of woodland management that benefits many species including dormice.
24th Feb 2012Location: Dingy Skipper Field, the Purlieu (SO, 765 443, map 4). Park at the top of the Purlieu (by West Malvern Road) and have a lift, or walk (10 mins) to Parkwood.NOTE ! Rough track for vehicles. Project: Clearing low-growing brambles from this old flower meadow to help the nationally rare dingy skipper butterfly.
               
  • Conservation Days are held between 10.00 am - 4.00 pm but please feel free to arrive and leave at any time between.
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits are available throughout the day, although you may like to bring your own lunch.
  • Steel toecap boots are ideal footwear; otherwise sturdy boots with good grip.
  • Please also have suitable clothing for practical work and changeable weather.
  • No experience is necessary as friendly guidance is given.
  • Children aged 15 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.
