Who We Are

We were established in 1884created from an Act of Parliament.

The Act was introduced to prevent encroachment of the Malvern Hillspreserve its natural aspect and keep them open for public enjoyment.

140 years later, despite needing to adapt to changes to habitats, the climate and the visitor experience, the purpose of our work has remained the same

To care for the Hills in a way that protects their character, while keeping them open and enjoyable for everyone.

That means the decisions we make must balance safety and people’s access with nature.

We're committed to this work so people can continue use the Hills and Commons to enjoy recreationfind space to disconnect, and so that nature can thrive.

Not just for today, but for generations to come.

We're a registered charity. If you'd like to know more about how we’re governed, you’ll find it here.

What We Do

We protect and manage more than 3,000 acres of special habitats, from ancient woodland to species-rich grassland.

We do the unseen, practical work that keeps the landscape healthysafe and accessible.

We keep paths walkable, views open and precious habitats nurtured.

The Hills are enjoyed by thousands of people each year. Without careful management, paths can erode, habitats can decline and access can become more difficult or unsafe.

The choices we make are with the long-term care of the Hills in mind, guided by best-practice and evidence on how to manage public land.

When trade-offs are needed, we prioritise decisions that safeguard the character of the Hills for the future.

The People Out on the Hills and Commons

Our small team care for this landscape day in and day out.

From rangers to volunteers, conservation to field teams, each person plays a role in caring for the Hills, so they’re kept safe for people to enjoy.

On any given day, that work might involve restoring an overgrown path, monitoring wildlife for diseasesupporting volunteers, or helping visitors to navigate the Hills safely.

It's a lot of work, but it’s work that matters to us - whatever the weather.

The Rangers

Mike: “We do a whole range of things in order to keep the hills safe, help people out on the Hills and make sure nature flourishes!”

Rangers do a wide variety of work. They protect the land, keep it tidy, manage car parks and work with volunteers

No two days are ever the same!

The Field Team

Katie: “Every day is different. We don’t ever necessarily have a day that is the same.”

From pruning and felling trees, mowing and strimming grass to maintaining our infrastructure – the field team keep the landscape we enjoy safe and looking beautiful.

The Conservation Team

Andy: “Part of my work is to ensure some of the rarer species are looked after on the Hills”.

Our Conservation team work to protect and enhance the wildlife and habitats of the Hills, whilst balancing the needs of visitors.

They care for endangered species, tackle invasive plants, carry out surveys and monitor change to help these habitats thrive.

Our Volunteers

Our volunteers - including 29 trustees - put their love for the Hills into action.

They generously give their time to support conservation efforts, guide strategy and support with a range of projects.
