Stockwatch Christmas message

As we approach the end of 2025 and reflect on the year, our latest Stockwatch figures highlight an important issue we want to keep front of mind for everyone visiting the Hills and Commons.

We’d like to begin by thanking the many responsible dog owners who keep their dogs on a lead around livestock. Your actions help keep our animals safe and allow grazing to continue undisturbed- a vital part of how we manage and protect these special landscapes.

At this time of year, many sheep are pregnant and particularly sensitive to stress. Even being chased briefly can cause them to abort their lambs, which is extremely distressing for all involved. Giving livestock extra space now helps ensure healthy pregnancies and calmer conditions through the winter months. The stats for Stockwatch this year are:

From the 1st January 2025
Number of chasing incidents - 14
Number of attacks on livestock - 9
Number of livestock deaths - 4

As the figures above show, there has been a worrying increase in dog-related incidents this year, not all of which are captured here. Chasing incidents and attacks have, in some cases, led to sheep and lambs being injured or killed. These situations are deeply upsetting for the animals, graziers and dog owners alike.

The good news is that these incidents are easily preventable. Keeping dogs on a lead:
• Still allows them plenty of exercise
• Reduces risks to your dog
• Removes the risk to livestock

Please help us spread this message and support our graziers by following the guidance above, so livestock- and everyone who cares for them- can enjoy a peaceful, stress-free festive season.
